+This function compiles a regular expression into an internal form. Its
+arguments are:

+  \fIerroffset\fR     Offset in pattern where error was found

+  PCRE_CASELESS         Do caseless matching

+  PCRE_EXTENDED         Ignore whitespace and # comments
+  PCRE_EXTRA            PCRE extra features
